Soap Stone Care and Maintance

Named for its soft touch, soapstone is actually an impenetrable stone, and not porous like granite or marble.  A great choice for the kitchen because it is highly resistant to stains and odors.  Caring for your soapstone spoon rest or utensil is very much like caring for your wood bowl or utensil.  Hand washing with mild soap and warm or hot water is recommended.   A light application of mineral oil will darken the soapstone and give it an added barrier to staining.  Apply mineral oil every 6-8 weeks for the best results.  Scratches and stains can be rubbed away with a fine grit sandpaper or try a green scrubby first.  Most likely your soapstone won't need any attention at all!
