How it all began

Before big mass market companies started importing lower quality bamboo wooden bowls and other wooden wares, the making of well-made wooden bowls, cutting boards and utensils served as the livelihood for many hard working Americans trying to support their families. As this practice became more and common, bowl mills were forced to close and a lot of good people were left without work.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, along with the lesser quality of these imported products, the FDA soon discovered that most of the wooden bowls, boards and utensils made in other countries were being put together with non-food safe glues, dyes and stains. Unfortunately by the time they discovered this, the damage was done. Americans were using the tainted products and the woodworkers in New Hampshire and Vermont were out of a job.

That is, until two passionate artists and local New Hampshire residents decided that America shouldn’t have to settle for low quality, mass produced woodenwares with toxic materials and opened up the New Hampshire Bowl and Board store. Gayle Kimball (also known as Kim) and Paul (or Paulie Walnuts as he is referred to around these parts) knew that the hard working and extremely skilled craftspeople in New England not only had a gift to share with the world but they had families to support so they employed the services of local woodworkers and craftspeople to create wooden bowls, boards and utensils that were hand crafted, 100% food-safe and truly one of a kind.

And because Paulie knew just about every wood worker within 100 miles of Concord, the store soon filled up with a collection of the most finely crafted wooden salad bowls, beautiful wooden cutting boards, gorgeous wooden spoons/spatulas and other assortments of wooden kitchen utensils. All genuinely unique and all crafted by the hands of hardworking Americans whose passion and skill is evident in every last detail. It didn’t take long for the store to get a reputation for producing some of the finest wooden pieces in all of New England.

As we celebrate the achievements of a successful 10 years, there’s plenty for New Hampshire Bowl and Board to be proud about. We’re proud of the pristine quality of our wooden bowls, boards and utensils. We’re proud of the hard work and dedication that went in to making our little shop a big success – especially amidst the giant corporations putting low-quality and unsafe wooden products into unsuspecting homes across the country. But most of all, we’re proud of being able to help good honest folk use their amazing talents to provide you and your family with the very best handmade products - and in turn be able to support their own families as well.  Everything that comes into our shop is special. Just ask our many customers whose wooden bowl or spoon has become a part of their own family tradition.

So please come by and help us celebrate. It’s easy to get here and we’ll give you a discount to show you how much we appreciate your business.
